Arsene Wenger warned that football is becoming "like a supermarket" and the next transfer window is shaping up to be a vulgar trolley dash, with Manchester City charging away towards the checkout. But if football's institutions were high street shops, what sort of store would your club be ?
Manchester United - Sainsbury's Superstore: Best option for out-of-towners.
Chelsea - Tesco: Making desperate bid for world domination and hated for it.
Liverpool - Army & Navy store: Two opposing forces permanently at war.
Manchester City - Harrods: Expensive, fancy pretensions, but a temple to bad taste.
Arsenal - Calais hypermarket: Cheap duty-free imports bundled through Dover.
West Ham United - Iceland: Kerry Kaytona diet for a Jeremy Kyle crowd.
Fulham - Liberty: Quaint and traditional, but whiffs of old people.
Hull City - Lidl: Cheap, no frills, delivers surprising value for money.
Newcastle United - Next: Next manager. Next owner. Next crisis...
Aston Villa - Morrisons: Never quite as appealing as the adverts promise.
Portsmouth - TK Maxx: Jumble shop full of old designer name cast offs.
Tottenham Hotspur - Marks & Spencer: Looks good on the shelf, but hideously overpriced.
Everton - Thomas Cook Travel: Threatening to go under in the credit crunch any day.
LA Galaxy - Victoria Wines: Only explanation for David Beckham going there. |
