Torquay United joined the Football League at the start of the 1927/28 season and since then there have been numerous highs and lows:
Finishing bottom of the league in their first season - fortunately they were re-elected
21,908 spectators in Plainmoor to see the Gulls play Hudderfield Town in the FA Cup (4th Round)
Missing out on promotion to Division 1 on goal average (0.48 of a goal)
Being promoted on four occasions (once through the Play-offs)
The fastest own goal (scored after just six seconds by Pat Kruse against Cambridge United)
Finishing bottom of the Football League for two consecutive seasons - but re-lected on both occasions
Being saved from automatic relegation from the Football League by the teeth of a police dog
Being the first Westcountry team to play at Wembley in the final of the Sherpa Vans Trophy
Two further appearances at Wembley in the promotion play-off finals
Saved from automatic relegation from the Football League as the ground of the team due to replace them (Stevenage Borough) was deemd unfit for League football
Saved from automatic relegation from the Football League in the last game of the season (away at Barnet - who were relegated instead)
How long will it be before the Gulls are back in the Football League ? |
