On Saturday 13 October 2007, Exeter City travelled to Northwich Victoria - the club at the bottom of the league and a side that had yet to win a game all season. Following the match, a dire goalless draw, a disgruntled supporter contacted the BBC Radio 5Live 606 phone-in show. The following is a transcript of the conversation that took place....
Presenter: We have Pete on the line who wants to discuss the Exeter/Northwich game.
Pete: Thanks...er yeah. Just want to say it's an absolute disgrace. I mean, we're playing one of the weakest sides in the conference and we can't do better than a draw.
Presenter: It was a poor result.
Pete: Poor result! Poor result! It's absolutely scandalous. The manager has lost the plot completely, he's got to go. I know we've never set the world alight over the years but I can't remember things being this bad. It's the end for us. The absolute end. I can't see us ever recovering from a setback like this. We're a complete laughing stock.
Presenter: Look Pete. I know it seems bad now but there is still a long way to go. I can't see you winning the leauge but hopefully things will improve.
Pete: I never expected for a moment we would finish top. I don't mind that so much. We're not good enough. But listen, to not finish top is one thing, but to fail to beat a team like Exeter is a different matter. It's a bitter blow for everyone up here in Northwich.
